Photos of Stephan Zirwes are the invitation to look at the world from a different, vertical perspective. Familiar subjects seen from a helicopter become foreign and new. This change of the point of view challenges the audience to reinterpret our surroundings. Stephan Zirwes recalls helping his father on amateur film shoots. “I am looking back to situations when we were hiking and I had always to walk twice for the camera. It was horrible in the very moment, but of course, I enjoyed the finished movie afterwards.” And Zirwes continuous to enjoy the impact of visuals today. He became a renowned German photographer specialising in aerial photography. Ranging from corn fields and scrap yards to festival parking lots and glaciers – Zirwes captures the structures and compositions to tell us incredible stories only visible from up above.
